Handy Hints For The JobSeeker

The Interview

This is possibly going to be your only chance to make a good impression on the interviewer so if you really want the job do your research well in advance. Make sure you know exactly where you're going and find out some information about the company. Find out what business they are in, are they a limited company/partnership or other, how many people they employ, how many branches do they have. Ask for details about the job you are applying for. Be prepared to answer questions about yourself and your CV.

Prepare yourself: No matter what job you are applying for first impressions count. It is better to be overdressed than not make the effort. Avoid smoking or alcohol prior to an interview as odours may linger. Make sure you arrive in plenty of time for your interview and that you take with you an up to date copy of your CV and any other information that has been requested or that is relevant to your application. Maintain a positive attitude and a confident manner. If you don't think you're right for the job then why would the interviewer. If you have any concerns about what is said this may not be the time to flag them up, why not wait and see if you are a prime candidate first. You may find that if they think you're right for the job the details can be negotiated later.

The CV

First impressions do count, so invest in some good quality stationary. Make sure you proof read everything and it is wise to have someone else check it again. Make the layout and type face easy on the eye and easy for the reader to scan for important information. Don't make your CV unnecessarily long but in the same respect give them something to read. It is important to include relevant information for the position for which you are applying but if this goes back too far then it will not interest the prospective employer anyway. Make sure it reflects your experience and accomplishments. Only include information, which is pertinent to the position, this is not likely to be your religious beliefs, race or hobbies. Inaccuracies will be picked up on so it is important not to "fudge" employment dates to cover for breaks between jobs or overstate the positions you have held. Don't bring negatives into your application as to why you left a position to take up another. Do include achievements, awards, courses attended etc.

Before you apply for the position read the advertisement carefully, if you do not have the required credentials then don't apply.
